Getting started
Create an account, provision a server, connect over SSH and take the first five steps.
1. Get an account
ByteRoast Cloud is in early access. Join the waitlist from the deploy page and we will email you an invitation with a $20 credit. No card is required until you upgrade.
2. Create a server
From the console, choose Create server, pick a region, a plan and an image. Add your SSH public key, then confirm. Most servers are ready in under a minute.
If you prefer the terminal, the API works the same way:
curl -X POST https://api.byteroast.com/v1/servers \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $BR_TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"name":"web-1","region":"ruh1","plan":"growth","image":"ubuntu-24.04","ssh_keys":["key_123"]}'
3. Connect over SSH
Use the IP printed in the console:
ssh root@203.0.113.10
We recommend creating a non-root user and disabling password authentication:
adduser deploy
usermod -aG sudo deploy
mkdir -p /home/deploy/.ssh
cp /root/.ssh/authorized_keys /home/deploy/.ssh/
chown -R deploy:deploy /home/deploy/.ssh
chmod 700 /home/deploy/.ssh
chmod 600 /home/deploy/.ssh/authorized_keys
4. First steps on a new box
- Update packages:
apt update && apt upgrade -yon Debian/Ubuntu. - Set the hostname and timezone so logs make sense.
- Add a firewall rule before exposing a port. The cloud firewall is managed in the console under Networking.
- Attach a snapshot schedule if the server holds anything you would miss.
- Enable unattended security updates, or patch on a schedule you control.
5. Next steps
- Configure the firewall and private networking
- Set up snapshots and test a restore
- Point a domain at the server
- Automate provisioning with the API
If something does not match this guide, email support@byteroast.com with the server ID and the exact error. We would rather fix the docs than have you guess.
